Manuka is similar in some ways to Goldenseal, in that it is effective against a broad range of pathogens and is a mucous membrane tonic. It has advantages over Goldenseal as it is also anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic, making it ideal for IBS. Manuka is a broad ranging antiseptic and astringent and has widespread applications both systemically and topically, which relate strongly to these actions.
It is also abundant in New Zealand.
